When opening an Instant Messenger application on the BlackBerry smartphone with font size set to 13 or higher the smartphone locks up or receives JV error

"Address updated externally. Changes will be lost and the viewer closed" error message received when attempting to update a contact on the BlackBerry smartphone

When attempting to update contact entries in the Address Book, the following error message appears:

Address updated externally. Changes will be lost and the viewer closed.

Refer to the appropriate resolution for your cause.

Content Protection on the BlackBerry smartphone is turned on.

Upgrade to BlackBerry Device Software version 4.0 or later. For instructions, see KB03901.

The Address Book database on the BlackBerry smartphone is corrupted.

If wireless synchronization is turned on, disable it by completing the following steps: On the BlackBerry smartphone, open the Address Book. Press the Menu key, and click Options. Click Wireless Synchronization, and click Change Option. Click No. Save the changes. Clear the Address Book database. For instructions, refer to the following knowledge base articles: Synchronize the Address Book data. For instructions, see KB17022. Note: To turn on wireless synchronization, follow the instructions for disabling wireless synchronization and select Yes in step 4.

Multiple databases on the BlackBerry smartphone are corrupted.

Back up all of the data on the BlackBerry smartphone. For instructions, see KB12487. Delete all of the data on the BlackBerry smartphone. For instructions, see KB02318. Perform one of the following steps: If the BlackBerry smartphone is not associated with a BlackBerry Enterprise Server, synchronize the BlackBerry smartphone with the computer. If the BlackBerry smartphone is associated with a BlackBerry Enterprise Server, activate the BlackBerry smartphone. For information on performing the enterprise activation process, see the specific BlackBerry smartphone User Guide located in Product Documentation.

BlackBerry smartphone displays JVM 529 error

The BlackBerry® smartphone stops responding and one of the following error messages appears:

JVM529

The smartphone encountered a Java® Virtual Machine (JVM®) application related problem and is unable to continue running

Ensure that the smartphone is running the most current version of BlackBerry Device Software. For more information on this procedure, see KB16068.

If the error message persists, or if the smartphone is already running the most current version of BlackBerry Device Software, further investigation might be required. To help further diagnose the cause, contact your wireless service provider or BlackBerry® Technical Support Services for further review and support.

Perform a hard reset by removing the battery from the smartphone and reinserting it. For more information on this procedure, see KB02141.

If the error message persists, perform a reload or upgrade the BlackBerry Device Software. For more information on this procedure, see KB10144.

The BlackBerry® smartphone stops responding and one of the following error messages appears:

JVM 505

Ensure that the smartphone is running the most current version of BlackBerry Device Software. For more information on this procedure, see KB16068.

If the error message persists, or if the smartphone is already running the most current version of BlackBerry Device Software, further investigation might be required. To help further diagnose the cause, contact your wireless service provider or BlackBerry® Technical Support Services for further review and support.

Perform a hard reset by removing the battery from the smartphone and reinserting it. For more information on this procedure, see KB02141.

If the error message persists, perform a reload or upgrade the BlackBerry Device Software. For more information on this procedure, see KB10144.

Note: To assist in capturing the error details, contact support while the error is still displayed on the smartphone. If possible, do not reset the smartphone or attempt to reload the BlackBerry Device Software until enough information is captured for a full investigation into the cause of the error.

To assist with diagnosing these types of issues, provide as many of the following details as possible:

What is the frequency of the issue? Is the issue easily reproduced or does it occur at random? If the issue is able to be reproduced, make note of the steps to take to reproduce the issue. Is there a specific application or function being used when the issue occurs? Have you experienced any issues with the smartphone as a result of the error message, such as being unable to use the browser? Have you recently updated the BlackBerry Device Software or other applications? When was the last backup performed of the data on the BlackBerry smartphone?
