How to set up Bluetooth connectivity between a BlackBerry smartphone and BlackBerry Desktop Software

When Bluetooth® wireless technology is used to connect a BlackBerry smartphone to the BlackBerry Desktop Software, all data is routed through the Bluetooth connection, which bypasses the wireless service provider's network. This feature reduces wireless network usage and allows BlackBerry smartphone users who are located in areas of insufficient wireless coverage to synchronize data and reconcile email messages.

Windows:

To set up a Bluetooth connection, complete the following tasks:

Verify that the system requirements to set up a Bluetooth connection are met. Verify that the Bluetooth software included with Windows XP or Windows Vista is being used. Set the BlackBerry smartphone to Discoverable mode. Pair the BlackBerry smartphone with the computer. On the BlackBerry smartphone, turn on the Trusted option for the computer. Configure Bluetooth connectivity on the computer. Synchronization via bluetooth technology is currently unavailable in Desktop Software for Mac Task 1 - Verify that the system requirements to set up a Bluetooth connection are met

To set up a Bluetooth connection, the following system requirements must be met:

The computer must be running the Bluetooth software that comes with Windows XP or Windows Vista (see Task 2). The computer must be running BlackBerry Desktop Software 4.1 to 6.0. The BlackBerry smartphone must be running BlackBerry Device Software 4.1 to 6.0. If the BlackBerry smartphone is activated on a BlackBerry Enterprise Server, the following IT policies must be set to False: Disable Desktop Connectivity Disable Wireless Bypass

Note: These two policies are located in the Bluetooth Policy Group. The default setting for these policies is TRUE.

If the computer does not support Bluetooth wireless technology, a supported Bluetooth adapter can be used (D-Link is not supported). For a complete list of supported Bluetooth adaptors included in Windows XP SP2, see KB841803, or visit the Microsoft Support Knowledge Base and search "List of Bluetooth radio drivers that are included in Windows XP SP2". As of BlackBerry Desktop Manager 5.0 the WIDCOMM 32bit Bluetooth stack is supported. On the BlackBerry smartphone, the Bluetooth Options screen must display Desktop Connectivity and Wireless Bypass in the Services list. The BlackBerry smartphone must be paired with the desired computer. Task 2 - Verify that the Bluetooth software included with Windows is being used

Windows XP and Windows Vista both come with a generic Bluetooth device manager. Verify that this native application is running or a supported Bluetooth stack.

In the system tray, double-click the Bluetooth icon.

If the Bluetooth icon does not appear in the system tray, open the Control Panel and double-click Bluetooth Devices.

If the Bluetooth Device window appears, then Microsoft Bluetooth software is installed. Therefore, the system requirements to set up a Bluetooth connection are met.

If the My Bluetooth Places window appears, then third-party Bluetooth software is running. To meet the system requirements make sure a supported stack is being used.

In the Control Panel, double-click Bluetooth Devices. In the Bluetooth Device window, click the Options tab. Select the Show the Bluetooth icon in the notification area check box. Click Apply, and then click OK.

Task 3 - Set the BlackBerry smartphone to Discoverable mode

Complete the following steps:

On the BlackBerry smartphone Home screen, click Options and then select Bluetooth. Display the menu and select Options. In the Discoverable field, press the spacebar until the field displays Yes. Save the changes.

Task 4 - Pair the BlackBerry smartphone with the computer

Complete the following steps on the desired computer:

In the Control Panel, double-click Bluetooth Devices. For Windows Vista users, click Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Bluetooth Devices. Click Add. Select the My device is set up and ready to be found check box and click Next. The Bluetooth software searches for any discoverable Bluetooth devices in the area. When the BlackBerry smartphone is detected, select it and click Next.

Note: If the BlackBerry smartphone cannot be detected, verify that all the system requirements to set up a Bluetooth connection are met.

Select the Let me choose my own passkey option. Type a passkey in the field provided and then click Next.

The following message appears on the BlackBerry smartphone: Enter a passkey for .

On the BlackBerry smartphone, type the same passkey as in step 6. On the computer, when the Completing the Add Bluetooth Device Wizard screen appears, click Finish.

Task 5 - On the BlackBerry smartphone, turn on the Trusted option for the computer

When the Trusted option is turned on, the connection authorization message does not appear each time the BlackBerry smartphone connects with the computer.

On the BlackBerry smartphone Home screen, click Options and select Bluetooth. Select the desired computer from the list of paired devices, then click Device Properties. In the Trusted field, press the spacebar until the field displays Yes. Display the menu and click Save. Task 6 - Configure Bluetooth connectivity on the computer

Complete the following steps:

Right-click the BlackBerry Device Manager icon in the system tray and select Properties.

Select the Enable Bluetooth Support check box.

Note: If the Enable Bluetooth Support check box or the Configure Bluetooth button is not enabled, see Additional Information below.

Click Configure Bluetooth. Click Add.

The Add Bluetooth Device dialog box appears, displaying instructions on how to verify that the BlackBerry smartphone is properly configured.

Click OK in the dialog box.

The Add Bluetooth Device window appears with an animated flashlight indicating that the application is searching for the BlackBerry smartphone. When the paired BlackBerry smartphone is detected, it appears as an icon in the dialog box.

Note: If the BlackBerry smartphone is not detected, an Unable to locate message appears. To repeat the search, click Search Again. If the BlackBerry smartphone cannot be detected, see Additional Information below.

Select the BlackBerry smartphone icon and click OK.

The new BlackBerry smartphone icon appears in the Bluetooth Configuration window.

Click OK in the Bluetooth Configuration window.

The BlackBerry® Device Software Properties window is displayed.

After a few seconds, Bluetooth - is added to the Connection Settings list in a Connected state.

In the BlackBerry Desktop Software, in the Options menu, select Connection Settings. In the Connection drop-down list, click Bluetooth-PIN: .

Select the Automatically switch from Bluetooth to USB when USB is connected check box and click OK.

The BlackBerry Desktop Software status changes to Connected.

BlackBerry® Desktop Software 4.1 to 5.0 BlackBerry® Device software 4.0 to 5.0  BlackBerry® smartphones Windows® XP  Windows Vista™ Windows 7™

If the Enable Bluetooth Support check box and Configure Bluetooth button are not available on the BlackBerry Device Software Properties window, the computer might not be using original Microsoft® Windows Bluetooth radio drivers. Verify that the Bluetooth device manager that is included with Microsoft Windows is running (see the procedures section).

If the BlackBerry smartphone cannot be detected on the Add Bluetooth Device window, the BlackBerry Enterprise Server may not have the correct IT policies turned on. Contact the BlackBerry Enterprise Server administrator to verify that the following IT policies are set to False:

Disable Desktop Connectivity Disable Wireless Bypass

Note: These IT policies are only available in BlackBerry Enterprise Server 4.0 SP3 to 4.1 SP6.

Note: If the BlackBerry smartphone has an IT policy that has removed the desktop connectivity service (located in the Bluetooth options), the BlackBerry smartphone will be able to pair, but it will not be detected by the BlackBerry Desktop Software.
