About Smart Dialing

The Smart Dialing feature on the BlackBerry smartphone allows a BlackBerry® smartphone user to set a default country code and area code to be used for outgoing calls. The default country and area codes can be specified so that any phone numbers that are specified as links (or any phone numbers in the BlackBerry smartphone contact list that do not contain these codes) are dialed correctly.

From the phone application, press the Menu key.Click Smart Dialing. Set the Country Code and Area Code fields. In the National Number Length field, set the default length for phone numbers in your country. Press the Menu key. Click Save.

Note: When calculating the default length for phone numbers, include the area code and local number, but do not include the country code or the National Direct Dialing prefix.

If calls to an organization are made frequently, this can also be set in the smart dialing options so the main number of the organization does not have to be dialed.

Set options for dialing internal extensions:

From the phone application, press the Menu key.Click Smart Dialing. In the Number field, type the main phone number for an organization. In the Wait For field, set how long the BlackBerry smartphone waits before dialing an extension. In the Extension Length field, set the default length for extensions. Press the Menu key. Click Save.

Note: For internal extensions, place an X before the extension either in the phone application or in the phone field of the contact to automatically dial the corporate number entered in step 4.

The BlackBerry smartphone differentiates between internal and external extensions by comparing the phone number entered for the corporation (in step 4) and a phone number field of the contact.

The code for the country that is called most frequently. The area code that is called most frequently. The number of digits in the telephone number including the Area Code, but excluding the Country Code. The number of the corporation that is called most frequently. The length of the pause in seconds between connecting to the corporation and dialing an extension. The number of digits in the extensions at the corporation called most frequently.

The phone options can also be accessed from the Home screen of the BlackBerry smartphone by clicking Options > Phone Options. For more information, refer to the BlackBerry smartphone User Guide.
